In the heart of Jersey City, 30 Journal Square – historic home of the Jersey Journal newspaper – is being reenvisioned as a city hub by local developers and urban planners. Future Green’s design for this public plaza and pocket park beyond maintains the Jersey Journal building’s historic facade and logo, using them as an armature for green and a gateway to the retail corridor beyond. This new public amenity stitches together the historic and the new to create a dynamic, pedestrian-oriented streetscape. Other material remnants of the newspaper’s headquarters also remain – I-beams create outdoor rooms, and their gridded forms filter out into the park through embedded paving accents, platform benches, and lighting armatures. Operating as an amphitheater for people-watching and a flexible, programmatic plaza for markets, outdoor cafes, concerts, or daytime yoga sessions, 30 Journal Square creates a new, performative urban stage for Jersey City.
