Future Green’s design for two unique garden spaces in this TriBeCa penthouse residence were developed in close consultation with the client; drawing on conceptual themes of eidetic memory, we attempted to recreate in miniature the woodland environment of the client’s youth. A glass-encased courtyard visible from the apartment interior becomes a jewel box rich with ferns and green foliage, mimicking a damp and dreamy ancient forest floor. Vertical stone edging reminiscent of natural basalt formations provides the framework for the courtyard planter. Wood decking offers a warm, tactile surface to take in a morning coffee or relax with an after-dinner drink. Lush meadow plantings surround the courtyard at the roof level, spilling over edges and softening the relationship between interior and exterior. A spiral staircase leads you to a garden in the sky with 360-degree views of lower Manhattan.
