Future Green’s master plan for the 6th Street Development at Gallaudet University, the Washington, D.C. campus of the nation’s premier institute of higher learning for the hearing-impaired, creates a system of connective, mixed-use corridors and vibrant destinations, knitting the historically isolated campus into the fabric of its neighborhood. Mindfully interpreting DeafSpace Design Guidelines, such as maintaining clear sight lines with prominent wayfinding landmarks, we distilled our design into an adaptable and sustainable kit of parts to shape the project’s open space and streetscape. Winner of a Potomac ASLA Honor Award for Analysis, Planning, and Urban Design, the plan will continue to evolve throughout the design process through construction. Engagement efforts included a series of interactive, graphically-clear playing cards that were shared with stakeholders during interactive planning sessions in order to engage users through a tactile and visual medium. standards intended to create an authentic and engaging destination, easily accessible to all. The master plan was delivered in April 2015 and subsequently received PUD approval.
