NJPAC is the heart of a new Art’s District that includes a series of mixed use residential, retail buildings, and low-rise residences situated around a pedestrian friendly streetscape. Landscape scope includes a 40,000 SF performance plaza, a transit plaza that serves the NJ light Rail, and a shared street. The residential Mews provides a leafy green pedestrian street and the Residential towers include a series of lush terraces with opportunities for dining and lounging. Inspired by the NJPAC institution, the landscape design provides an inclusive and flexible design that gives the local community a much-needed vibrant green streetscape and an outdoor living room experience. A connective stone carpet unites the district with a series of programmatic interventions, such as a large flexible lawn, two-way stacked seating, a social circular bench, oversize movable loungers and art programming. A series of truss-like vine columns anchor the central stage and lawn area, providing a support for temporary tent structures, and state of the art stage lighting. The planting scheme is designed with the ecological, poetic, and seasonal performance of the plants in mind. This ecological framework serves the local flora and fauna and helps mitigate pressure on the adjacent Passaic River.
