Following the initial gallery opening of Sections of the Anthropocene, Future Green sought to further explore how the piece Imagined Realities - a series of 7 concrete totems - would perform in a true urban environment, and in 2022 the installation was relocated to Future Green’s Red Hook backyard. Prior to installation, the fabrication team excavated pieces of concrete in patches intended to mimic the natural degradation of paving that occurs over time, approximating cracks and fractures that might develop due to weathering or movement.
Once the totems were located and installed, the excavated patches were planted with resilient urban vegetation, including Panicum virgatum and Solidago sempervirens, setting the piece up for its next phase of evolution. The result was a striking transformation—a network of twisting, colorful plantings weaving through layers of concrete, asphalt and other man-made materials. One can imagine that, given decades of growth, the urban fabric itself will become a trellis for the plants’ continued expansion and resilience.
