Chroma Forest is a site for immersive experience, wonder, and re-engagement with the bounds of vision and space. It is also a playful reflection, through color, of the regional landscape surrounding Grand-Métis. Colorful, translucent triangles mimic the pyramidal forms of White Spruce in the forest; a colony of Quaking Aspen trees sprouts between, creating ephemeral screens that obscure and reveal as visitors move through the space; while gravel mounds and grassy flows reference the St. Lawrence estuary and contribute a tactile groundscape to the design.
The iridescent qualities of the shelter forms – oriented for maximum sun exposure – refract the sunlight, breaking white light into a dozen component tones and bathing visitor in dense, rich color. Occasional boulders encourage rest and reflection in this warm field of color, while crunching mounds of gravel invite more active exploration – running, leaping, tapping, dodging, listening, looking, feeling. Drenched in rich and unpredictable chromatic tones, visitors are encouraged to follow their own path, seeing – walking – and seeing differently.
Chroma Forest offers a new, otherworldly lens on the landscape, intensifying light, shade, and color while playfully acknowledging the balance between what we construct and what we deem natural. The field creates a free-for-all space of wonder aimed at experiences of discovery, connection, laughter, and joy.
